Tuberculosis exposure feared on India-to-U.S. flight
"U.S. health officials are trying to track down 44 people who sat near a woman infected with a hard-to-treat form of tuberculosis aboard an airliner from India to determine whether they have been infected, authorities said on Friday. The infected woman is 30 years old and is being treated for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, or MDR TB, at a hospital in the San Francisco area, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She had been diagnosed in India with MDR TB but traveled last month anyway, the CDC said." ...

"An unexpected cold snap this week sent thermometers plummeting in Florida and heat-hungry iguanas dropping from tree branches like autumn leaves, scientists and witnesses said." ...

When scientists AND witnesses are seeing the same surreal scene you know the Endtimes are just around the corner.

More than 1M lose power in Calif. storm
"Howling winds, pelting rain and heavy snow pummeled California on Friday, toppling trees, flipping big rigs, cutting power to more than a million people and forcing evacuations in mudslide-prone areas. Flights were grounded and highways closed in Northern California as gusts reached 80 mph during the second wave of an arctic storm that sent trees crashing onto houses, cars and roads. Forecasters expected the storm to dump as much as 10 feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada by Sunday. The heavy snow was slowing search efforts for a family believed to be missing in the mountains, authorities said." ...

We PostApocaDocs sometimes think "Family missing in the mountains" will have to become its own Scenario, due to its frequency.

Peak Gold?
Production from the world's biggest producer, South Africa, has sunk to levels not seen since the 1930s, he said, and despite a long-standing bull run for the price of gold, a finite supply of the precious metal means not enough is being produced to meet demand. "Demand is driving this inexorably," Mr. Norman said. "People talk about peak oil, but peak gold should also be a feature of discussion in 2008." ...

Gold prices usually rise as tensions and fears rise globally. It's a bull market on fear!

Breakthrough in effective bird flu vaccine
There has been a new step forward in the development of an effective vaccine against H5N1, the bird flu virus that's also dangerous to humans. By adding an agent that stimulates the immune system, it appears that the existing vaccine is effective against various strains of the bird flu virus. ...

Now all we have to do is catch all the birds and vaccinate 'em!

Malaysian Cabinet committee to tackle climate change
"Environmental needs go beyond environmental impact assessments." Azmi said the setting up of the committee would mean a more concerted effort in dealing with issues of the environment. "As it is, some ministries don't look at climate change mitigation as their responsibility. This cabinet committee will bring everyone in." ...

When all else fails, form a committee. Nonetheless, sort of a start.

California sues EPA over tailpipe rules
"California sued the federal government Wednesday in its ongoing bid to set the country's first greenhouse gas limits on cars, trucks and SUVs, providing new data to show its program is superior to a federal plan. EPA Administrator Stephen L. ... Johnson said energy legislation signed by President Bush will raise fuel economy standards to an average of 35 miles per gallon by 2020, which he called a far more effective approach to reducing greenhouse gases than a patchwork of state regulations." ...

By 2020, we should be getting 350 miles to a gallon.

Project Offers Sanctuary For Endangered Birds
"Down by the river, there is a habitat for endangered species recovery program being created with a price tag of $2.47 million. The endangered species piping plover and least tern have been threatened with predators since the building of the dams along the Missouri River." ...

Cedar County Commissioner Frederick Pinkelman wondered "when funding for so many needy projects is unavailable, where they get the money for the work they are doing." Maybe a little resistance from the locals, but the endangered piping plover and least tern are no longer quite so least.
