The rodents, who contrary to popular belief do not commit suicide, breed best when thick, fluffy snow forms a blanket under which they can shelter, reproduce and feed on moss. Now researchers at the University of Oslo have reported that a general warming of the earth has given rise to a cycle of freezing and thawing which has meant that snow melts and freezes at ground level depriving the creatures of food.
