"These [line fish] are slow-growing, and what was abundant initially has now been exploited." Cowley described the trend as "serial exploitation". As one popular line fish reached near-extinction, anglers switched to the next more abundant species, [leading to] 80 per cent of the fish which would occur naturally already fished out.
